Gallery Exhibit with José Best
José Best started quilting after being diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and it quickly became his outlet. Prior to that José enjoyed making clothing, bags, totes, aprons, placemats, pot holders, and other crafty creations.
José’s wife is also a quilter. He used to ask her “Why do you buy fabric to cut up into little pieces and sew it back together. Why don't you just make a dress or something out of it?” Now José cuts the fabric into little pieces and sews them together to create his beautiful quilts. His daughter will ask him to make or mend them some clothing and he will tell them “I’m a quilter!”
His quilting has evolved from sewing sashing and borders on panels, to following quilt patters, to designing his own! José loves making quilts to give to his family and friends. He has also made a bunch of comfort quilts to help and care for others who have cancer. His quilts have gone to family members in New York, Chicago, Florida, Hawaii, and Panamá. The quilts that are in his exhibit here at Bay Quilts are some of the quilts that are still here with him in the Bay Area.
We are so excited to share these quilts with you. We fell in love with José from the moment he walked into our shop. He is so creative and positive and we have yet to see him without a smile on his face. We feel so lucky to have his quilts featured on our walls and have the ability to share them with you during these times. José is so kind, thoughtful, giving, and always thinking of others. Every time he comes into the shop he has a new quilt that he is designing and making for someone else. We believe every recipient who is lucky enough to get one of José’s quilts will surely be able to feel his love wrapped around him when they snuggle up with the quilt that he made for them.
