Class - Use Your Words by Fern Royce
Workshop - Saturday, October 5th (12-4pm)
Use Your Words
Words in quilts have a long history, whether it’s just names, initials, dates or phrases. Most often the words have identified the maker(s) or been a collection of names within the quilt blocks as in friendship quilts. Those were often stamped, inked or appliqued. I will teach you how to piece your words using the method created by Tonya Ricucci in her book Word Play Quilts. This is indeed a playful and easy way to add words to your quilts as it is “liberated,” allowing you to modify your words – changing the height, size or setting to suit your quilt. Once you learn this method you may be tempted to add words to all your quilts!
Sewing machine, including an extra machine needle and 1-2 wound bobbins, foot pedal, cord and sewing manual.
Basic sewing supplies: ruler, rotary cutter, mat, thread, pins, scissors, seam ripper, etc.
Bring a piece of flannel or batting that can be used as a design board in class and transport your work home intact.
Please mark all your tools!
Fabric: an assortment of scraps for your letters. On half – 1 yard of background fabric. Take care that your fabric choices include good value contrast so that your words are visible.
