Artist Statement by Judy Bianchi
"I am a quilter, a collector of fine fabrics, and a passionate teacher.
My quilt making story begins in the late 1970’s. When my husband, Michael and I moved from San Francisco to Sebastopol, the local fabric store offered a quilting class and I signed up. I felt like I’d found my calling!
When the shop closed, a friend and I decided to open a quilt store. I taught quilting classes there until we closed the shop. I continued to teach however, at Fabrications in the town of Healdsburg. This gave my students and my self access to a diverse and beautiful selection of fine fabrics which is one of the prominent inspirations for my personal works. I am happy when I am able to inspire my students and inform them about design principles, aesthetics and satisfying color palettes. Since Fabrications closed in 2018, I was happy to continue my teaching legacy at the knit shop, Purls of Joy also in Healdsburg.
Teaching has always been a real pleasure for me. I love sharing my vast experiences and techniques and the desire to be creating something has always motivated me to keep learning through workshops and classes offered by a myriad of well known quilt designers and artists. Many of my quilts have been created to become samples for all the classes I taught.
I have studied the art of hand dying fabrics and created a side business in order to sell most of my hand dyed and hand painted fabrics at quilt shows and to local venders. Today, I do hand dyed fabrics for my own works.
I also make smaller art quilts now, piecing and fusing the fabrics into abstract designs. Many of them contain unique fabrics collected from my travels. They represent my passion for the Japanese aesthetic and textiles.I love quilts and this art form and hope to express myself as a quilter for years to come!"
Our shop is still CLOSED to the public.
These quilts will ONLY be able to be viewed on Instagram, Facebook, and our webpage.
